Residents escape through the window as the six-story Afriland Tower is destroyed by fire.

When a six-story commercial building called Afriland Tower caught fire today, many residents and onlookers scrambled for shelter, causing panic on Broad Street, Lagos Island. Viral videos showed occupants of the building in Lagos Island’s Marina neighborhood leaping out of a window.

Thick smoke rose from the high-rise structure, and a ladder was used to rescue more people.

On Tuesday night, the Federal Fire Service declared that the fire had been contained, but its staff stayed on the scene to evaluate the building’s structural soundness. The alarm was received at precisely 1:24 p.m., and the White Watch and Campus units were immediately sent to the area, according to a statement signed by Deputy Controller Paul Abraham, the Service’s National Public Relations Officer.
